This term’s English Language course builds on foundational skills to advance students’ competence in grammar, phonetics, literature, composition, and vocabulary. Over eight weeks, learners will explore contrastive conjunctions, review figures of speech, delve into mythology and literary analysis, master new sound patterns, and expand thematic vocabulary. Regular hands-on exercises and assignments ensure understanding and fluency.
By the end of this term, students will be able to use contrastive conjunctions correctly, recognize and apply figures of speech, analyze myths for characterization and theme, articulate key English phonemes with confidence, and employ a richer, theme-based vocabulary.
1. Grammar
Week 1 – Conjunctions as Contrasts- Focus on “although” and “whereas” to link ideas that contrast.
- Practice crafting sentences and short paragraphs showing concession and comparison.
2. Creative Language & Figures of Speech
Week 2 – Review of Figures of Speech- Revisit simile, metaphor, personification, and alliteration.
- Identify examples in sentences and short extracts; compose your own examples.
3. Literature & Composition
Week 3 – Myths and Legends- Explore definitions and characteristics of myths and legends.
- Read a selected African myth or legend; discuss its cultural context.
- Assignment: Write a short retelling of the tale in your own words.
- Identify and describe main characters (protagonist/antagonist) in the chosen myth.
- Extract and discuss central themes (e.g., bravery, trickery).
- Exercise: Map character traits and theme statements in a simple chart.
4. Speech Work (Phonetics)
Week 5 – Consonant Sounds- Practice articulating /θ/ (as in think) vs. /ð/ (as in this), and /w/ vs. /j/ (as in we vs. yet).
- Drills: Minimal-pair listening and repetition exercises.
- Distinguish short /u/ (as in put) from long /u:/ (as in food).
- Activity: Listen & mark word lists; then record and compare.
- Review all term phonemes; practice contrast drills combining consonants and vowels.
- Quiz: Identify sounds in words and mark correct IPA symbols.
5. Vocabulary Development
Week 7 – Religion-Related Words- Learn and use thematic vocabulary (e.g., worship, sanctuary, psalm, pilgrimage).
- Practice: Write sentences or a short paragraph using at least ten new terms.

- Weekly Grammar Drills: Conjunctions exercises, sentence rewriting.
